[Netdisco] Netdisco Topology Discovery question

Dear Netdisco admin(s),

Im currently working on a project where i wish to use your system for. I
have some questions about the discovery of the topology of the network.

I have the following quick sketch (see attachment). My questions are related
to this sketch:

Q1: Is it possible to get the topology info from the customer network and
save that to the netdisco server in our network (connected through VPNs, i
think its a SSL layer vpn).

Q2: Is the above possible for more then one network? Like: save the topology
from customer1 AND customer2 on the SAME netdisco server?

All our (customer) networks use Cisco devices. I hope u can answer my
questions.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, that would be possible, as long as the devices in the customer
network allow your Netdisco server to query them (so you'll need the
SNMP credentials and the customer would have to allow your server
through any relevant access lists).

That's possible, but to Netdisco it would just be one big network.

Hello,

Thank u for your quick answer. So, it is not possible to discover
exclusively customer network topology's while running Netdisco in my own
network, which is excluded from CDP ?
For my project i want to be able to determine the individual topology of the
customers networks, and save the details in my own network. I was thinking
of an alternative, where the database is seperated from the netdisco server.
see the attached sketch. Would it be possible to run Netdisco in the
customers' networks, but saving the results of different customers in our
own network (over internet or VPN) in multiply postgres db's on 1 machine?
So, by using different ports. Or is the Netdisco server's database limited
to localhost?

Another question: The database does actually save the info of how the
network devices are connected to eachother and what interfaces right?

Again, thanks in advance for your answer.

Regards,

Vireshov

Your network need not run CDP (or LLDP), if you do not wish to discover and
map it. Your netdisco server needs to connect via SNMP to the
routers/switches in the network being mapped.

Let me re-phrase this:
*For my project I want to be able to determine the topology of the
customer's networks, from a server running at my location.*
This is very much possible.

Are you thinking of giving the customer access to the netdisco reports? If
no, you do not need multiple database(s) server(s).

Hi Sanjeev,

Thank you for your very quick answer.

I don't want to give the customers access to the netdisco reports. However,
I want to use the database information (in what topology devices are
connected to eachother and which interfaces) for a program I am planning to
write. Therefor, I need to be able to seperate the information of the
customers networks from eachother. So the database must be organized to
seperate the information from Customer1 from Customer2, so I can make db
query's just for customer 1 for example. Is this possible? Or do I need to
run a different Netdisco server for every network I wish to analyze?

I give u another attached sketch....(netdisco.jpg)

Seeing the sketch, would it be possible to analyze the individual networks
"Customer network" and "Customer2 network" (note: these are 2 different
customers, not the same) with the netdisco server in my own network, while
excluding analyzing our network? So the database must contain topology
information for customer 1, and topology info for customer 2.

All our customers use *Cisco* devices. We want to analyze the network for
Cisco devices. We want to know: what devices are connected to eachother
(topology), what interfaces (f.e.: fa0/1, s0/1), and the device
name/hostname.

Again, thanks for your answer !
